Antioxidants natural sources

Ever wondered what causes iron to develop dust? The answer is reactive oxygen species/molecules, it is a redox reaction of iron and oxygen, also in the presence of moisture or water, rust is actually an iron oxide.

Aside from oxygen and water you also need time, quite a lot of it sometimes because this process takes quite some time. The human body is actually also a victim of oxidation, it is a natural result of many biochemical/metabolic processes of the human body, such as basic energy production within our cells. 

This oxidation, by the way, is caused by free radicals or you can call them radicals, which are atoms that have one or more unpaired electrons that are unstable and highly reactive just like reactive oxygen species.

These unpaired electrons are the radicals or free radicals that you hear of in commercials for skin-care products for example. The sun's light contains ultraviolet light which can cause damage to the skin and produce radicals in the human body which can harm skin and skin cells through causing oxidative damage/stress.

Like I said, radicals come naturally from metabolic processes like energy production. Any living organism needs some energy to do its activities.

The human body needs quite a bit of energy which is produced from nutrients found in food, like carbohydrates, calories and fat. The body breaks them down and converts them into glucose and then a process called glucose oxidation occurs where the glucose is again broken down into carbon dioxide and water, this produces energy and the energy is used by our cells.

From these reactions, unpaired electrons or radicals can be produced and every person has them, some more than others and this depends on lifestyle and environmental factors. For example, who do you think has more radicals, a smoker or a non-smoker? 

Smoking means more free radicals because it carries with it reactive oxygen into the body, this is why smokers are at risk of accelerated aging, cancer, and many other health problems. With the passing of years, this damage caused by radicals will accumulate and it will show on the person's body.

However, there is a cure, or more like a treatment actually in the form of antioxidants which are for radicals kind of like antibiotics are for bacteria.

You heard about free radicals before, you probably heard them in association with skin-care products, with smoking, with pollution and more.

What are they and where do they come from? Are they like bacteria or viruses? Well, they are not really like bacteria or viruses, at least not in all regards but like bacteria, some of them can be healthy or useful to the body while others are quite harmful.

Accelerated aging is something that can be seen for example in smokers, especially heavy smokers, they age faster and it's because of this damage, oxidation which accumulates in time, years. 

It doesn't always cause things like cancer obviously but it can, there is that risk but we still do not know all of the mechanisms of action and factors involved in this.

To protect ourselves from free radicals, we can use antioxidants.
Staying away from factors that produce more is also a great idea.
